Results of an empirical survey of attitudes toward European integration conducted among political elites and population in sixteen European countries (INTUNE – A Quest for Citizenship in ‘Ever Closer Europe’, FP6) will be analyzed in the paper. The importance of following aspects of identity among members of these groups will be examined: ascriptive (respondent’s ethnic origin, parental ethnic origin), civic (citizenship, respect for laws and institutions), cultural (tradition, language). Also, the significance of different predictors of identity formation will be checked, including education, age, gender, nationality, religious confession, political orientation. Differences in identity formation between members of political elites and general population will be tested together with differences between some Western and Eastern European countries. In the analysis of data gathered in the project among 100 members of political elite and 1000 members of general population collected in each of the countries, during the year 2007, we will rely on factor, correlation and regression analysis.
